Signs from the Departed

By Kim Hutchinson

Personal Items Moved

My first Christmas without Dad was tough as he had passed away less than two months prior.  I was feeling rather blue so we chose to limit our decorating to the main level of the house. Despite sadness, it gave me pleasure to display the charming painted wooden Christmas ornaments and Santas that my father had carved.

After we finished decorating upstairs, I went downstairs to do laundry. Suddenly, a flash of yellow caught my eye. Much to my surprise, I saw one of Dad’s carved ornaments – a little yellow fishing boat with Dad’s name written on the bottom – hanging on the handle of our wood stove, near the bed that Dad slept in when he stayed with us. I assumed that Steve had brought the wee ornament downstairs but, when I asked him, he said he thought I had put it there. We were both momentarily confused. There were no other decorations downstairs, and no one else had been in our basement in over a year.

Suddenly, I knew the answer. It was a sign from Dad! He had come to visit us in spirit form, to let us know that he was alive and well. He chose an ornament that he had carved, and which had his name written on it, to ensure that we knew he had been there. The message could not have been clearer. This amazing realization filled me with profound joy.

I excitedly shared the news with my mother and, as we chatted on the phone, two separate strands of Christmas lights suddenly lit up her living room. Dad was giving us another sign!

Our departed loved ones are never really gone, and they never stop loving us. When our time comes to leave this plane, they will be there to welcome us back Home.

Birds, Angels, and Other Psychopomps

When my beloved grandfather crossed over I know he was in good company. Before he passed, he told my mother he was surrounded by 11,000 angels. He also had a snowy owl to guide him Home. This magnificent bird was spotted at sunset by my parents as they were journeying to say goodbye to him.

Birds and angels are two common soul guides known as psychopomp, who escort a person’s spirit back Home. Seeing a rare bird or witnessing unusual bird behaviour can be sign from a person’s soul or guides.

My grandfather’s snowy owl was sitting next to the highway, atop a snow bank. Dad spied him first, and then Mum hit the brakes. Together, they stared in awe at the large bird as he sat calmly staring back at them.

As I look back on the transitions of other family members, I recall being visited by a bird in every case. Each bird caught and held my attention by acting in an unusual manner. In Dad’s case, he sent a bold blue jay to insistently peck on my window. When my cousin left this plane, her spirit appeared as a tiny yellow bird. (Sheila was a diminutive blond.)  The wee warbler stayed by my side for more than an hour. Every person’s soul chose a bird that was representative of an aspect of their human personality or appearance.

In my grandfather’s case, the snowy owl performed wonderfully. Looking upon his serene face, Mum received the message that it was her father’s time to transition Home. This knowingness filled her with peace, and helped her to release him with grace and serenity.

This is such a nice experience! I actually had a similar one as well. This past Christmas was also my first one without my Dad. On Christmas Day, after we were finished opening our gifts, I decided I was going to put things back under the tree. As I was doing this I noticed a yellow piece of paper sitting directly on the tree skirt, which was definitely not there before. I turned it over and it was an old banking receipt from 1992 with my dads name on it. I couldn’t believe it, especially considering this was at my mom and stepdad’s place. The year 1992 is significant to me and Dad because it was the year the Blue Jays won the World Series, and my Dad was at both games. We used to talk about it frequently, I always think of my Dad when I see a blue jay. I love that my Dad showed up on Christmas Day. Thank you for sharing your experience!

  2. This is so touching, Kim! I’m happy that you and your mom could receive his energy. You know he’s always with you and no more than a heartbeat away but the moments of confirmation are so sweet. Warm Wishes for a Blessed 2022 to you and your family. XOXO, Rosemary
