Enlightenment Challenges: When Spiritual Awakening Feels Hard

The journey back into enlightenment (Oneness) is definitely not for the faint of heart. Regaining your spiritual power and awareness seems like it should be an exhilarating and fun experience, yet many spiritual seekers are, at times, overwhelmed by difficulties they face. After the initial thrill of reconnecting with your higher self and guides wears off, the process begins to feel like a job.

Why Enlightenment Challenges Your Old Reality

I’m out of the box…now what?

The path back to enlightenment causes us to think and live outside the proverbial box that once defined our reality. Spiritual awakening and the subsequent expansion of consciousness forces effectively dissolves the walls (old beliefs) that obstruct the light (the truth). Through this process, the spiritual seeker begins to question everything s/he has been taught. This questioning phase is healthy and beneficial, even if it feels unsettling.

I gave up my cozy reality for this?

Humans are social beings. We want to feel valued, appreciated, loved and understood. That makes the questioning phase of enlightenment particularly challenging. As we challenge the status quo, we risk losing our place in society (i.e. not being able to function in one’s present career). Our relationships often suffer too, due to our intrinsic changes which alter the way we relate to others. Many feel rudderless, like a ship adrift without direction.

When Spiritual Awakening Feels Overwhelming

Humans are inherently social creatures. We desire to feel loved, valued, understood, and connected. Spiritual awakening can jeopardize that sense of belonging. As you challenge the norm, you might feel as though you no longer belong in your previous life. Careers may lose their significance. Relationships might become strained or dissolve. Conversations may feel altered. Priorities can change.

Isn’t it ironic how oneness-seekers can’t agree?

During this period, feelings of vulnerability often emerge. You might seek guidance through healing sessions, readings, prayer, meditation, or spiritual mentors. Alternatively, you may dive into research, eager to comprehend the awakening process on an intellectual level. A quick online search uncovers countless spiritual viewpoints, many of which contradict each other. One teacher offers one perspective, while another presents the opposite. Confusion intensifies. Anxiety sets in.

Many individuals describe this phase as feeling lost, like a ship adrift without a compass. There is awareness, but no clear path yet. Expansion occurs, but there is no firm foundation.

Reality as we know it is an illusion

Only love (and light) are real

Only Love is real, and everything is made of Love. Love is the energy of creation. You and I made of Love, and everything we create is made of Love too. If something doesn’t feel loving, that’s the illusion. Truth, outside of Love, is illusory and relative to the believer. Therefore everything we accept as true is relative, subjective and fleeting.

As consciousness continues to expand, our perception of reality will shift until we are experiencing a whole new world of ‘truths’. Stay as detached as you can from your beliefs, and those of others. Accept that you do not have the answers. Be fluid and flexible like water, and allow your awareness to shift and expand.

Breaking free of your old reality

Spiritual awakening encourages us to think, feel, and live beyond the confines of our previous reality. As our consciousness grows, outdated belief systems start to fade away. These beliefs once served as barriers, influencing how we perceived ourselves, others, and the world around us. Awakening gradually dismantles these barriers, allowing the light of truth to shine through.

This is the moment when many individuals begin to question everything. Ideas about success, relationships, religion, identity, purpose, and even reality itself can suddenly seem unstable. This questioning is not an error. It is a vital and necessary aspect of spiritual development, even if it feels profoundly unsettling.

Navigating Conflicting Spiritual Information

Hotel Reality is all all-inclusive resort

Archangel Michael once told me, “Either everything is real or nothing is.” That quote has come back to me repeated over the years and has helped me to deal with contradictory information from different spiritual sources. Basically, it means that everyone is right, or everyone is wrong. You do not get to cherry-pick reality; it is all-inclusive.

Stop being attached to your beliefs. Don’t compare them with someone else’s truth. Your path is perfect for you. Dare to be unique! Even if you are the only person in the world to believe in something, then your belief makes it true.

Your journey is uniquely yours. Your experiences, beliefs, and insights are not intended to align with anyone else’s. Even if you were the sole person in the world to hold a belief, that belief would still influence your reality. Embrace your uniqueness. Awakening is not a collective endeavor.

Love as the Basis of Spiritual Truth

Only Love is genuine. Everything consists of Love. Love is the very essence of creation. You, I, and all that we create come from that same origin.

If something feels unloving, it indicates an illusion. Truth that exists beyond Love is fleeting, subjective, and dependent on the believer. As consciousness expands, our understanding of reality naturally evolves. Old truths fade away. New ones emerge. This is not a failure; it is growth.

The important thing is not to hold too tightly to any belief, even your own. Remain as detached as possible. Acknowledge that you do not possess all the answers, and that you are not meant to. Be adaptable. Be open. Like water, let your awareness flow, change, and grow.

Spiritual awakening is not about reaching certainty. It is about discovering how to exist comfortably within the unknown.
